Michigan has placed co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss on leave amid a University of Michigan Police Department investigation into alleged computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall in December.

ESPN and The Detroit News first reported the police investigation. A Michigan football spokesman confirmed Weiss is on leave but provided no further information about his status with the program. Weiss did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

According to a statement from Crystal James, the Deputy Police Chief with UMPD: “The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during Dec. 21-23, 2022. Since this is an ongoing investigation, there is no additional information to share.”

No one is named in an entry on Michigan’s crime log for Jan. 5, when police responded to a complaint at Schembechler Hall and determined a crime may have been committed. According to the log, an employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization.

Michigan state law prohibits access to computers, computer systems and computer networks for certain fraudulent purposes, as well as intentional and unauthorized access, alteration, damage, and destruction of computers, computer systems, computer networks, computer software programs and data. It also prohibits the sending of certain electronic messages.

Weiss, 39, joined Michigan’s staff before the 2021 season after 12 seasons in the Baltimore Ravens organization. Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant under Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh at Stanford. Weiss coached quarterbacks last season and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2022.
